Mcrosoft’s Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii,
and Sony Playstation 3, are also must-have gifts according to research by the consumer electronics website Experian
Hitwise.
It is the first time in three years that the Nintendo Wii has
not been the most sought-after games console, while the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues
to sell well following its launch last month.
The study of internet traffic to consumer electronics websites
found that mobile phones remain the most popular choice overall, closely followed by toys and video
games.
Also in the top 10 are hair straightners, and Go Go Hamsters, a
battery-powered robot pet which is proving a surprise hit. Several major toy retailers including Argos,
Tesco, and Hamleys have been forced to limit the number customers can purchase because of strong
demand.
Research director Robin Goad said: “UK consumers are clearly
holding out more for bargains this year and have been prepared to order online later.
“The week ending December 5th was the peak in online product
searches, so searches for products during that week are a great indicator as to the hottest gifts this
Christmas.”
